Company History

In the early 1800s, the small rural community of Ilion Gulch, New York was comprised of craftsmen and farmers. Rifles were considered essential tools for self-defense in the newly settled area, and the self-sufficient locals were skilled at building their own. The only component they couldn’t manufacture themselves was the barrel, and obtaining one required a trip to a major city. 

23-year-old Eliphalet Remington II was living in Ilion Gulch in 1816 when he traveled to a barrel-making facility on behalf of his father, a local blacksmith who wanted to learn the trade. Eliphalet learned the process and devised ways to improve on it, so that when he returned to Ilion Gulch, he made a barrel for his own weapon and entered a local shooting contest. Residents were so impressed by the young man’s creation that they inundated the Remington blacksmith shop with orders for barrels. Remington Arms Company was officially founded in 1840 and was called E. Remington and Sons. Eliphalet remained its president until he died in 1860 

The company’s products became extremely popular in the second half of the 19^th century. Especially renowned was the Rolling Block Rifle, one of the first weapons built specifically for use with the more powerful smokeless powders that came into widespread use after the Civil War. Western buffalo hunters relied heavily on the rifle in the later decades of the century, and the popularity of Remington firearms was rivaled only by the legendary Sharps rifle.
 

The Rolling Block Rifle was adopted in the 1800s by several European powers, including Norway and Sweden, for their military forces, and both France and Britain used it in combat during World War I. During that conflict, Remington also built its own versions of the M1907/15 Berthier, the Mosin-Nagant, and the Lee Enfeld rifles for various Allied powers. During World War II, Remington provided both weapons and ammunition to the US military, including the M1903A3 bolt-action rifle. Later in the 20^th century Remington created the M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS), which was the army’s preferred sniper rifle until 2010. The weapon is still used by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

The 21^st century has been a time of expansion and innovation for Remington. The company’s position as a manufacturer of both firearms and ammunition keeps its workforce busy providing cartridges and shells for the ammunition-hungry civilian marketplace. In 2010 Remington unveiled its Hypersonic Steel™ line of shotgun shells, which can travel up to 1700 feet per second. In that same year the company also released its Versa-Max semi-automatic shotgun, a weapon that uses variable gas pressure to fire 2.75-, 3-, and 3.5-inch shells. In 2012 Remington gained a US military contract to build 24,000 M4A1 carbines, which are scaled-down versions of the M-16 rifle. In 2013 the company introduced its first air-powered rifle since 1928, the Remington Express.
