Winding Down

The holiday break provided good hunting time but did not produce much in game brought to bag. The best part was the opportunity to spend time with my son Nathan. We both stuck with our stick bows instead of going to the guns, but in reality it mattered little. We saw does and spikes and a few skittish pigs but not much else.

In theory, the best opportunity for a shot with the long bow for the evening hunt, was sitting on a board hidden in some trees about nine feet off the ground. The wind was blowing cold, I was tired, and opted for a more comfortable position in a chair behind a cactus with only a narrow shooting lane. The sound of crunching corn startled me from a cat nap and as my head popped erect, I was eye to eye with an old doe that stood in momentary disbelief that a potential predator had gotten this close.

It was my first opportunity to bow hunt this year but excitement and confidence waned a bit as I watched the smoke from the burn barrel. There was little consistency to the wind direction and this would drastically cut the chances of a twenty yard or less encounter with a deer or pig.
Confident Shooting Makes Better Hunters

As fall approaches hunters begin thinking of sighting in their rifle of choice. Ethical hunters should do everything in their power to humanely harvest their quarry. Sighting in your rifle helps ensure that your rifle will hit where it is aimed. Ideally hunters would shoot year round and continuously improve their skills, but with busy schedules and rising cost of ammunition, this proves harder each year.
